I'm sure this is somewhere, and I'll start reading, but just real quick.....

How come when I rip a disc using iTunes and then look at the "Get Info" for one of the tracks, it gives me 44/192 for mp3? I thought you couldn't get this high unless you did lossless.........

It probably says 44khz and 192kbps.

The first one is sampling rate. The second one is bitrate.

When you see 24/192 to describe high-resolution files, the 24 is for the bit depth (i.e., 24 bits), the 192 is for sampling rate (192khz). The bitrate for such a track will likely be greater than 1,000kbps.

iTunes (current version) will never rip a CD to higher than CD quality (16bit bit depth, 44khz sampling rate)

I don't have time to type more now, but this should help ... the staggering bitrate difference gives one a feel for the amount of information lost to compression.

Friends don't let friends rip to lossy formats.

Here is another site that should be added to the list in Post #1.

DSD-Guide.com | Direct Stream Digital Audio

DSD files are becoming more prevalent as more systems are coming on board that can play the files like the Playback Design units.

Join "Society Of Sound" and you will get bonus downloads - very high rez files (most of them 96/24, with some going to 192!) to keep (legally), most of them having the Bowers & Wilkins label! Attached one sample of the cover art (provided too from them) on one of the pieces.

For sure, I have a whole collection from them, from Classicals to Jazz and more.

I recommend this download from HDTracks 96kHz/24bit. Very good.

Definitely compression and peak-limiting visible on the waveforms, though; just FYI.

I am not sure if Ariama (ariama.com), which is a Sony classical store, has been mentioned. I must second the above suggestion of HDTracks. But my current favorite is Linn (linnrecords.com). The selections are not vast but if you have a favorite album and if they have it, getting a studio master version to replace old versions is an option. Linn's recording quality is simply awesome.
