Info from JL Audio...

Hello,

I believe your email is indicating that you have a f113v1 powered subwoofer with a no power symptom needing servicing.

You are correct that it is most likely one or both of the caps that you are referencing. However, at JL Audio when a Fathom amplifier is presented to us for servicing we not only replace these caps with versions that have 22,000 hours at 105C temp ratings, but replace 5 additional caps as well.

Then all of the revisions that have been called for since the serial number was built are also applied to the amplifier making it a current revision of the original v1 amplifier model.

Here are the details on the program.

JL Audio offers a flat fee service program for older Fathoms that are out of warranty. JL Audio will repair any electrical or mechanical defects, plus inspect the amplifier, the front mounted control panel processor and the driver. Any service bulletins and production revisions would be performed on selected parts, updating the unit to the latest version of the Fathom v1 subwoofer. If the driver needs attention it is either refurbished or replaced, at our discretion.

The flat fee cost is $400.

You are responsible for shipping the unit to JL Audio and we will return the unit to you at our expense. Your Fathom is then covered by a one-year parts and labor warranty.

JL Audio has two facilities that perform the flat fee service program; Miramar, Florida and Phoenix, Arizona; with the one nearest to you handling the servicing.

An original shipping container, with the black sock to protect the cabinet’s finish, is the ONLY acceptable means of packaging and shipping to insure the subwoofer arrives without damage. If you have discarded your original shipping container, they are available for $95 plus the shipping costs to you.

If the above is agreeable, please provide the following information so we may initiate the service sequence for you.

1. Your name
2. Your shipping address
3. Serial number of the unit
4. Mobile phone number (allows text messaging for payment links)
5. Whether you will need a shipping container from JL Audio

Respectfully,

Hello,

I have not heard back from you regarding the servicing for your f113. If you would like to attempt the capacitor replacements yourself, I am providing the caps parts numbers that we use. These replacements should correct the issue but are just part of what is done to older Fathoms when they are returned to JL Audio for the Flat Fee program of service and updating.

Just let me know if I can be of further assistance to you going forward.

C510 Nichicon 33uf, 400V, 20%, PTH, 7.5mm pitch x 16 mm D, radial, aluminum electrolytic, 22,000 hours , 105C capacitor
C515 Nichicon 100uf, 35V, 20%, PTH, 2.5mm pitch x 6.3mm D, radial, aluminum electrolytic, 22,000 hours, 105C capacitor
The other five caps I replace are just off to the left side of the housekeeping transformer.

I finally managed to remove the back panel of the sub. It really needed M6 screws. Just 1mm bigger would not work at all. Thanks again for the advice.

I've checked the 2 capacitors and they are both dead. I'm getting 4.8 ohm and 5 ohm as ESR values for the 100uF and 33uF caps respectively.

Since the suggested capacitors (Panasonic) are only 1000H in term of lifespan I'm wondering if these (see links below) could be good replacements. Expected life is at least 10000H and temp is 105C.

It would be nice if someone could confirm they represent a good choice before I order them.

Thanks again for your help!

Default F112 capacitors?

I've got a dead F112(v1) and hope to have the amp repaired here. I've got several friends who do that kind of work.

Does anyone have the capacitor list for the F112? The information on the F113 is useful -- thanks to everyone! Now I just need to see what's involved with the F112.

ALSO, after removing the plate amp, is there any special technique needed to get it back into place?

At 71 and with lousy eyesight, I'm hesitant to take the thing apart, but it's dead anyway, and $400 + shipping for 90 lbs. could buy a couple of very nice dinners.

In response to my previous post: Randy was enormously helpful. Still, when I opened the sub, I realized that disassembly and reassembly (never mind repair) are beyond my abilities at this point. I'll let JL repair it.

Randy's post was incredibly helpful - I sent it to a local repair centre and they charged about 2.5 hours of labor (Australian $375) and A$50.50 for 8x capacitors (105C,22,000 hours) based on Randy/JL Audio Australia's recommendations.

Couldn't be happier - this is way beyond what I can do

Hello everyone I am new to the forum. I came across this forum when I was researching how to repair/troubleshoot my JL fathom F113v1
I’ve read this whole thread and I have already replaced the 2 “known” bad caps on the plate amp board like JL recommends people to do. My problem is different though. My amp turns on, it also plays audio. It’s just very very very quiet. If you turn the volume all the way down it plays nothing. And if you crank is all the way up it’s very very quiet. I metered the output at full tilt and it’s like 2.1 volts. Has anyone came across this problem with their F113V1???

Thank you for this thread! I have a slightly different amp as I have in wall subs I purchase last year so my amp is external. But can someone confirm the capacitor locations are roughly the same? Lots of screws to remove to get to the bottom of this board.

Thanks!
