I love visiting as many recording studios as I can and have been lucky enough that my work has allowed me to do it over the years in a few markets (Miami, LA, NYC).

A few nights ago, I visited one of the few remaining recording studio's in NYC, the monitors in the main room were Yamaha NS10's, Auratone's, big ADAMs, and very large horn loaded 4x's 15inch woofer monsters. In the secondary room there were NS10's and soffit mounted monitors with 2x's 15's and a ported 18" sub per side. Very powerful sound indeed!!


I kept thinking of "circle of confusion" that Dr. Toole talks so much about. Each studio is so different one to the other, even when its in the same production house. The above video is a MUST watch!

Anyways, I got home that night and spent a lot of time with my Revels and just felt really great about the sound I am getting. Since the 208's are so flat, you really hear the nuances from recording to recording. Even the "bad" recordings sound pretty decent and the great recordings sound spectacular. With so many different production techniques, studios, monitors, "circle of confusion" - I am sure glad I can enjoy pretty much anything I play through the Revels.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. The last "studio" I was in was what was left of AIR Montserrat a few years ago. It was gutted, but you still got a sense of the place and I was in awe of all the recording that took place there over the years.

WOW! So sad. One of my all time favorite albums, Synchronicity from The Police, was recorded there.

I've heard that some of the studio's that the Foo Fighters featured in the Sonic Highways documentary have gone away too...

Hi Pio! Those main momnitors look a bit like Westlakes, although I am unfamiliar with any of their models that have a front baffle quite like that. Possibly older models? The horns are similar to a JBL 2397 which Westlake did in a number of configurations and is a distinguishing characteristic of many Westlake designs. I'm trying to figure out which studio complex you were in. I used to routinely tour major studios when I worked for Otari, especially when the MTR90 was in development. I was the liaison for the Japanese
engineers during that period but only because my English was better than theirs. That was a long time ago and several technologies ago.

I was in Jerry Wonda's studio (Platinum Sound) on 46th and 9th. Jerry mentioned that those particular monitors were commissioned for Michael Jackson and he acquired them from Epic just before they were to be shipped to Japan. Those suckers were LOUD!

PS - I used Otari reel to reel machines before digital took over the studio world. I guess we're saving a ton of money on grease pencils and edit tape..

Platinum looks sweet. I bet they are loud! A lot of people think the 2397 called "The Smith horn" by JBL guys (and I suppose it's variants) was the best sounding radial horn of the era. Despite its relative small size it takes a 4" (2" exit) compression driver and it puts out big time. Of course, it's now a 40 plus year old design although people are still making horns in similar pattern. The horns on those monitors are custom, not 2397s but I bet the geometry is very similar. The original JBLs were also made of wood by the way.

Indeed! Editing took a big leap forward with that change to digital. Depending on when you were working on Otaris, I probably made a buck or two off each machine your studio/station bought. I got an override on all MX5050 (2 &4) track sales in the US as part of my compensation package which is one reason why I remain fond of them to this day.
