Default Wilson Recon Tactical

Considering buying Wilson Recon Tactical, any thoughts about 5.56mm vs 6.8 SPC?

Steve.......The Wilson Recon Tactical is a fine weapon. Not an inexpensive weapon, either.

Considering the international availability of the standard NATO round, 5.56 would probably be the best caliber for all purposes in my opinion.

Have been thinking for awhile about acquiring an AR-15 type rifle to shoot at the range for fun and just to "have". :>) (Reminds me that a few weeks ago, my wife, who is a very good shot with her Glock 19, asked why would anyone want more than one gun??? My answer, "Why would anyone want more than one handbag??)

The only "military" style rifles currently in the safe are a pre-ban H & K 91 a NM M1. I'm happy with the quality and performance of my Wilson "1911" so I thought that I would try their "AR-15"; 5.56 is the obvious choice but other cal. options are available that I have no experience with.

Steve, with that being said, as Dan expressed, 5.56 NATO (.223) is the way to go…….. plenty of 'ammo options'. Now if you were thinking of longer range hunting then by all means the Remington 6.8 SPC.

That is one beautiful weapon. I have owned several Bill Wilson 1911's and they are excellent pieces. I'm sure their version of the AR15 is no exception.
Whatever calibre you choose, enjoy it. A work of mechanical art.

Steve,
I own a Recon SR Tactical in 5.56mm. Incredibly nice trigger action and very nice accuracy, I consistently fire groups of about 1.5" out to 150 meters using an Eotech. Not bad for an old guy with glasses. Lots of choices for ammo as mentioned above, but I've found that for whatever reason all my long guns seem to do extremely well with PMC X-Tac ammo. I even prefer it over Lake City. I've even run some Russian ammo through it with no problems, though I could smell the lacquer coating on the rounds burning off.

As stated above, it's an expensive rifle but not out of line compared to its competitors (of which I also own a few). Wilson Combat is also an excellent company to do business with and if you are former or active military they offer a discount, I think it was 10%. If you're looking at spending this much money you won't go wrong with Wilson. LWRC is also a good product in that price range, as would be HK. Both of those are piston guns and not direct impingement though. Some guys prefer one vs the other. In my experience the only difference has been my piston guns are easier and quicker to clean.
