Saw Paul Simon’s opening show in Vancouver Wednesday night. A great show from a true master. Paul at 77 still can sing great, his band is fabulous and the sound was some of the best I’ve heard. Paul played for over 2 1/2 hours. Highly recommended!IMG_4749.jpg

Ry Cooder and The Hamiltones tonight at the Moore Theatre in Seattle. Wonderful show, with a mix of new and old songs, a little story telling, the excellent drumming of Joachim Cooder, beautiful harmonies from the Hamiltones, and Ry’s soulful guitar.

Last night I saw Macklemore and Kesha at the Bridgestone Arena in Nashville. It’s not a concert I would have bought tickets for but I am up here moving my daughter into a new apartment as she is about to start graduate school at Vanderbilt. She had the tix and invited me to go with her. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. Macklemore put on a great show and was back by a great group of R&B musicians. It’s amazing how really good musical background can make rap listenable. Kesha- I didn’t like as much. She looked good and had a very good voice but she came across as very angry. Both artists’ repertoire are about embracing diversity but one’s music came across as uplifting and positive and the other’s was more about “just you wait.”

While I don’t expect to be buying any of Macklemore’s music I probably would not turn down an invite to a concert by him. Kesha, not so much.

Went to the Vancouver Island Music fest last weekend.
This is an annual event that I’ve been attending for the last 20 years. Some great artists including the aforementioned Ry Cooder, Arlo Guthrie, The Step Crew and a fabulous set by Walk Off the Earth.
3 days of great music, company and on-site camping. The highlights were Walk off the earth and the Step Crew. Of course Ry Cooder and Arlo Guthrie were excellent but if anyone ever gets a chance to see the Step Crew or walk off the earth go! You won’t be disappointed!!

Excellent, thanks for the tip - I’ve never heard of either.

The inimitable Leo Kottke tonight at the Lincoln Theatre in Mt Vernon, Washington. At 72, he still plays wonderful guitar. His voice, which was never great, is showing age, but still a wonderful show.
