I'm running with a Mapleshade under my GyroDec. Yes it's more money but it sure is pretty!

I had a custom made 4" thick maple block under my turntable on my Solidsteel wall bracket and decided it was sucking away some of the detail, dynamics, and bass grip so I went back to using the default 3/4" MDF that came with the bracket and have been happy with it since.

I have a 4" Mapleshade in Cherry that is effective and purty but I can't imagine that it's any better than a Boos block (which I have in the Kitchen for chopping). I represented the John Boos Company 20 years ago in a financing transaction in Chicago and they were terrific folks. Who knew we'd someday be using their products for turntable isolation platforms?

True that. I might add that the Boos butcher block significantly reduces rumble and provides a certain airiness to the top end when I'm chopping onions. : )

A granite slab 3 cm thick will cost less and weigh four times as much as the same thickness wood chopping block.
Maple weighs 38-45 pounds per cubic foot. Granite weights about 168 pounds per cubic foot. Last edited by GaryProtein; 02-17-2014 at 07:09 AM. |

But wouldn't granite have a greater tendency to transmit vibrations (or echo back vibrations from the TT) than a solid piece of Maple?

But it will have very different damping and acoustic properties.
