The newer DAC's have all received great reviews. I am sure your proposed combination will sound great. Unless you were able to A/B the options you would never know what you are missing, if anything.

The option you are proposing will cost you significantly less than a C-1100 or MCD-500. Unless it is important that your gear matches, go ahead and enjoy.

Of course I would like the gear to match...nothing like a nice new MAC piece either, and one box is better than two. But, I'd still be using a MAC as a transport, and I have a workable location to install the DAC, and have it look good.

The cost of say, an MCD500 will be prohibitive for me in the foreseeable future. Who knows, maybe one day I could pick up a used MCD1000 to use as a transport, feeding the DAC-2. That would still be a sweet setup.

There are a lot of used newer DAC's out there that would probably make your 7009 sing like never before.

PS Audio DAC's are nice
That Cambridge DAC Magic is pretty amazing for the money
I have also had the Benchmark, and a Bel Canto for a while.

None of these on the used market would break the bank, and would be pretty easy to sell if you weren't happy with it.

I'm sure there are a lot of excellent choices, and would all give top notch performance. A new WFS DAC2 seems the best most logical choice due to its price, and that is uses the new 32 bit ESS Sabre DAC chipset. Another criteria is the size and shape of any additional box under consideration. The relatively small size of the WFS and the proportions of its box could fit well on the right side of my system, next to my turntable. There simply is not room anywhere else in my system for more boxes.
