Default Review of the Stones Mega Box of Exile on Main St.

For those of you with your fingers on the trigger today, we managed to get the box a few days ahead of the street date. Sorry we couldn't get it sooner...

Here's our analysis, see what you think! Either way, for those of you that take the plunge, enjoy!

Jeff

Did you actually listen to the vinyl?

You are the first audiophile/reviewer either professionally or average punter that actually thought it sounded anything than flat, lifeless and extremely dissappointing.

I believe the vinyl was mastered from the CD, not any analog original tapes.

Oh Jeff -- you've been snookered -- as turntable mentions Stephen Marcussen did the CD digital mastering & flattened/compressed the heck out of it while Doug Sax (The Mastering Lab) cut the vinyl lacquers from that (CD) mastering.

No one that I'm aware of with any influence as a reviewer has given this anything but rave reviews. If anyone is interested -- just pick up the CD for $10 at Target & save $160+.

MF, who I agree with some times and disagree with on others, hit it squarely on the head by incorporating everything I've read about the vinyl. More here.

musicangle.com - By Michael Fremer -- Music * Reviews * Audio * Sound * Vinyl...

The art work also lacks any sense of attention to the original design/details & more here:

Flowering Toilet: Exile In Pixelville

For me, I'll stick with my MINT original, 1st pressing. Too bad -- because I was really looking forward to a great vinyl release.

Bob...I've got the Super Deluxe Version of Exile as well as the original. So far the original gets the nod for better sound but the new version is not all bad and recommended if you're a die hard fan like myself and want the latest and greatest of a Stones lp.

Let me correct your post Dave:

That's too bad TT. Yes, as a copy similiar to mine would fetch $200+ I'm afraid (12 postcards are still attached & mint as well). Had the latest box set been the "go-to copy," the going rate for the originals would have dropped like a rock. However, that is not the case & the originals/1st pressings w/the cards have skyrocketted in value.

Let me know if you want me to help in your quest.

Bob...you're correct and original/1st pressing can usually be found depending on your location and store selection. Prices of course will vary depending on condition and if all post cards are intact. I've yet to see one come through the store that I work at but that could change anyday. It's worth looking for and when you do find a copy buy it.

A colleague gave me a rather large cache of original 70s LPs - probably 200 or so - that was in storage for the past 20 years. I scored many minty pressings of classic titles including Exile on Main St. My original copy (unsure of which pressing it is) sounds outstanding!! I never knew it Exile could sound sooo good.

I just threw it on the platter. Divine. Absolutely my fav album of all time.
Just checked my stampers. Artisan logo. Initials inscribed dead wax are PR(SP)
all 4 sides with side A also having AT. Looks like I have stampers -A, -D, -C, and -C. Don't know when this copy was pressed but sure sounds damn fine.

I won't be running out to purchase the latest reissue with this in my stable.
