Jeff....once you get it and you put it through its paces, I would be curious how you think it stacks up against the Zesto phono. I know the Zesto, at $3,900, is a lot more expensive but I would be interested in how you think the two units compare. I am still considering the Zesto and may borrow a unit from my local dealer to compare it to my Nagra BPS. Thanks.

The spawn of the famous Manley Laboratories Steelhead was on show for the first time at CES 2012

According to Eveanna Manley, the new Chinook phono stage is the answer for anyone who’s after a world-class vacuum tube phono stage but doesn’t want to cough up big bucks. ‘The price is awesome!’ she told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine, ‘and the heart circuitry is essentially the same as the Steelhead, which sells for $US8,000, but the Chinook costs just $US2,250.’ Each Chinook channel uses the two triode sections of a 6922. RIAA equalisation is completely passive. There are internal gain settings of 45dB (MM) and 60dB (MC) and rear-panel DIP switches can be used to adjust resistance (31 options between 26 and 800 ohms including a 47kohm setting) and capacitance (seven settings across a range of 50pF to 350pF. ‘The Chinook is really designed for music lovers, not the switch tweakers, and we worked so hard to keep the sound of the Steelhead,’ said Manley. ‘Believe me, that was a lot of work because it’s all built right here in the United States – Chino, not China, as we say – so we need to find ways to keep labour costs down.’ Manley told Australian Hi-Fi Magazine that she expects to start shipping the first Chinooks to dealers on 23rd Jan.
