At $15K, I would not expect my CD/SACD player and DAC to be described like this: "In some ways the Playback Designs MPS-5 is like a very good SET amp, sacrificing the frequency extremes for the midrange". No way.

Not quite as positive as the review in Stereophile. I would still like to hear the unit at some point.

Default Why michael Fremer

Michael Fremer has made some concessions to digital. It still strikes me as kind of strange to pick him as the reviewer. Why not give to a writer who uses digital as his reference the job. Someone who maybe does know what "negative digital artifacts" sound like. Surely there is enough analog goodies to keep Uncle Mikey busy. I could understand sending the units to him for a counterpoint. BTW I am a fan,

I'm not qualified to say the PD is the best. I have not heard all the contenders. It does get my vote for best. It is an excellent player. To find better you will have to conduct a side by side test.

BTW I heard the PD on a true full range system. NOT SET LIKE AT ALL.

Heard this player thru a setup comprising of Wavac pre/power and WP7 last week. Initial view:

Build - up there with the best.
Display - Red and rather "big" as against current range ofnsimilar players.
Sound - clean and clear. Nothing "outstanding", allowing listener to enjoy long period of listening.

Nice and not pricy as compared to dCS Puccini over here. S$15 asking price.

I would still stick to my 808.

A fine player. Not quite in the PD class.

More than $10k, using US$1 = S$1.4, its about US$11k plus/minus.

Its still available. wait till I tell you about Wavac combo ..... and the looks and performance .... and when you hear them .... ahem ....

Since I am already so deep into Meridian, I just let this "pass", same like the Daniel Hertz. If I have an opportunity like you, well, ...... except for the speakers, I would dive straight in for the Playback 5, Wavac .... & slowly hunt for speakers of my choice who can take the beautiful SET 150 watts per channel!

Oh well, time to stop dreaming and go listening ..... to my own Meridian system. So far, so good, itch never goes out from the shop to home with me .... yet!
