Joe, I remember you were dissatisfied with the 210s when you returned them.

What do you think has made them sound better to you? If it was only room treatments, then the Ref 110 would also be sounding shrill in the same room.

I am most interested to know what factors caused this transformation in the 210. Eg. more break in time, change of other components, better power lines, new tubes etc.

I am struggling with my own 210 pair and it is also sounding weak and shrill.

Look forward to sharing your experience.

What's the rest of your system. Don't seem to be able to find it!

Hello Myles, rest of the system is:

Aurender S10 music server > Ayon Skylla DAC > Audio Research REF 5 SE > Audio Research REF 210 with KT120 > Legacy Whisper XD speakers.

There is a Xilica XD 8080 processor between preamp and amp (comes standard with the Legacy speakers)

Cabling is mostly Acoustic Zen.

For my case, it is the room. I have 2 sets of amplification for the ProAc. ARC set & the Cary pre & power combo. the Cary combo was also sounding pretty strained & bright prior to the room treatment removal. This was so evident that in fact I had 1 pair of them up for sale with the help of a friend (I have 2 sets of the monoblocks). I'd thought that the Cary did not enough juice to drive the D80 & was being overdriven on the occasions I used them. After I removed the room treatment & discovered the bass, I tried the Cary monoblocks on a whim. Surprise ! No more strained top end. Sounded warm & lush. I was shocked to say the least. Immediately called my friend & asked him to send my not for sale anymore Cary back to me.

As mentioned, the ref110 is starting to sounded soft in the slightest way. The ref210 sounded just nice. The set I have on loan is fitted with 6550s with about 400hrs on them.

Regards,
Joe Ling

I use it occasionally when not using the Aurender. Sounds great. Organic & non-fatigue. It's a keeper. I use the Digi Master II filter I think.

Chose it over ARC CD8 & Ayon top of the line CD player.
