Looking forward to posting my thoughts and pics soon. Im sure ill have plenty of questions for you guys later on.
Congrats on the new sub. Your going to love it

Has it arrived yet?

Cheers
Matt

MY, MY, MY.... I think I have fallen in love. When the fathom arrived the first thing that impressed me was the packaging. It just screamed first class product, from the green donuts, white gloves, calibration mic and bag to the thick foam inserts you can really tell JL means business. I really appreciated the easy box removal method because I dont think I would have been able to remove the F112 otherwise.

This is by far the sexiest(can I use that word to describe a subwoofer?) I have seen. It really adds class to my room rather than stick out like a sore thumb like some other larger subwoofers I have seen. The gloss black is truly beautiful.

I knew going in the F112 was 100+ lbs, but man this thing was like a small safe! Right now I have it on carpet (I will buy a subduded or Sound anchor stand soon) so it was hard to get my fingers under the beast to move. Once in place I first ran ARO. ARO made me realize I have some things to tighten down and secure. Picture frames and doors were rattling haha! A stand should help in that area right?

Next I ran Yamaha's YPAO. It set a 60hz crossover with my mains running as large, and surrounds as small. I changed that to 80hz x.o. and made all speakers small like JL recommends. I have the ELF trim set for 0, tested polarity and found 180 was correct, the LP filter is off, and still have to adjust for the phase. I wanted to do a test of different of different types of media so I didn't get into tweaking yet.

First I listened to some music I was familiar with. With 2.1 stereo I ran through Diana Krall, Norah Jones, John Mayer, Bill Withers, John Coltraine to name a few and the first thing that striked me was how much depth and feeling was added to my system. Everything was very precise and smooth, bass notes were right on and felt very alive. I still need to blend the sub in more but already the improvements made were astounding.

Next I wanted to try out a game using my PS3. I tested Battlefield 3's Beta. This is by far the best sounding video game I have played. I think the F112 had alot to do with that. The explosions and gun shots had so much body and punch to them that all I could do was smile and laugh. Anybody with a 360 or PS3 has to try this out for the LF sound effects alone. The F112 handled everything so effortlessly and transformed my room into a living breathing battlefield.

Afterwards I tested out Kung Fu Panda and Transformers 3. The HT experience was just as satisfying as Music listening. Needless to say, JL has made an excellent high end product well worth its cost.

What is the best way to make sure phase is set properly?

Congrats on the JL Audio sub. I love mine.

I assume you mean relative phase? I would play a test tone at 80H (your cross over point) and try different phase settings until you find the one that sounds the best. If no test tone, I would pick a piece of music with a good bass line and experiment until you find one that sounds the best. Do your listening from your main listening position.

I use a SMS-1 with a sweep display on a tv screen and adjust until the sweep curve is as flat as possible at the cross-over frequency. If no SMS-1, use the above.

Congratulations on your new f112
Glad your enjoying it.

It will sound even better after 100-200hrs break-in time to loosen up.

I knew Fathoms were great for music but had read on other forums it was lacking in HT. I have found that to be far from the truth. My F112 is placed 14 ft away from my optimal listening position yet still handles everything I send at it with ease. This is a sub with very few weaknesses. It may not dig as deep as some much larger subs but what it does do is absolutely amazing for its size. I have yet to hear another sub that has this type of sound quality. Can't wait for twins!

So I've been thinking about getting a second F112 but was curious how a F113 would match and blend with my F112. Has anybody tried this combination?

I've had a quote for a new Fathom 112, considering the price shipped and taxes paid was less than £200 different to a second hand one i was looking at makes it an awesome deal.

Now to do a bit of overtime at work and sell my PV1.
