SACD was and to a great extent still is a closed system, encrypted, with limited playback options and content, and confusion around 2 channel and 5.1 channel sources. In my view it was never positioned well as a consumer format capable of mass adoption.
That is peripheral to the big issue that they didn't go to single inventory, imho.

But all this, including the referenced blog post, is water under the bridge and old news.

Almost all of my digital music is now file based, and I can't easily add SACD's to the mix.
Sure you can. I have thousands on my server.

Using an Oppo 103/105 you can easily get the DSD files from an SACD. Roon even does the transcoding to PCM for sources that are not able to play a DSD.

I have been playing all my SACDs since I archived then to my server.

Hi Chad,

Is it easy to rip a SACD with the Oppo 103/105? Is the result a DSD file? Are the rips bit perfect?

Thanks so much,
Ken

I really enjoy SACD disks. They sound fantastic with my Marantz spinner. Listening to The Doors right now! I have bought about 50 or so this past year.

Yes. I've ripped 80+ SACDs using my Oppo 105D in the last 6 weeks. It takes a little while...about 15 minutes per disc, but the result is a bit perfect DSD file of the SACD. I'm now running the files back through my Oppo DAC as DSD files...super fun!

For SACD being a 'dead' format they seem to be pressing a hell of a lot of new SACDs every month but that's simply an aside. They said the same thing about LPs and are starting to say that about CD as well. Safe money bet is that CDs and SACDs will be around for a long time, just like LPs in the audio-nut community.

Kal: Can you publish a list of steps and equipment needed to rip SACDs native? I've seen various posts to that effect both here and on CAudiophile forum but would like to see a single coherent set of steps that will explain how I can rip a number of my long list of SACDs to native DSD storage (for demo/travel purposes, etc...)

Would be interested in that too. My Oppo (BDP-95) does not have such functionality but if it's going to be an option with the new 205 then I might purchase one to take care of my SACDs going into hard drives -very useful indeed.

I have published a quick description of how I do it with an Oppo but its is applicable to the other suitable players. The PS3 method, too, is well documented by TedB.

To write something comprehensive would be time-consuming but you can ask me as you go.

Unlikely. BDP-103, 103D, 105, 105D and a few non-Oppos.

Sony does not support and from my understanding specifically opposes any attempt of "ripping" the DSD tracks from a SACD.

With no knowledge of any correspondences between Sony and Oppo, I would be extremely surprised if the "back door", if you will, on the Oppo players (and the few other manufactures models) is not patched in any newly released models.
