Donate to your local food bank

If you are financially healthy and weathering the virus in good shape, consider donating to your local food bank, United Way, or both. Most food banks are struggling now for several reasons:
* Grocery stores have curtailed their donation programs while they focus on keeping their own shelves stocked. Food banks are now often having to pay full retail for food, which can be up to 10 times what they used to.
* Demand at food banks has risen dramatically as low-income families are laid off or forced to miss work without adequate compensation.
* Many companies have curtailed their donations to food banks as they struggle themselves.
* The majority of volunteers at food banks are retirees, and they’re no longer able to work at a food bank since they’re more vulnerable.

Most local United Way organizations are also struggling from a decline in donations as employees are laid off or forced to stay at home without pay, and corporate donations decline. United Way and other local community foundations are often great ways to donate, since they focus on evaluating the needs of the community and putting the money where it’s most needed. In my community, for instance, United Way has set up a separate fund for Covid-19 response and is targeting funds towards food banks, shelters, and hotel costs for people who are destitute and need to isolate , but have no place else to go.

In either case, food bank or United Way, you know that your donation is working locally for your community. If you want to support your food bank, donate money, not food unless they’re asking for specific things you have, it’s usually better to let them fill their greatest needs.

If you can afford it, there’s no better time than now to divert a little bit of what you might spend on audio towards those living on the edge.

Tony, I not only donate but also keep perishable inventory for them to draw as needed. It’s been a bit, but it’s also not uncommon for me to donate a few hours picking and assembling orders, they claim I am their best volunteer!
