Default Restaurants Around the World

Restaurants Around the World

Name your favorite restaurant[s] around the world. I'll start off first. One brilliant place I enjoyed while visiting Denmark:

Kong Hans Kaelder

I enjoyed this restaurant very much. Bring your Platinum Amex card LOL! I had a blast here. The service was exceptional. Most of the food I was able to recognize. I did have something in an egg. I am not sure what I ate but consumed it anyway. I was too embarrassed to decline. The atmosphere was beyond elegant. I'm ghetto with a check book. It was hard for me to fit it...but I enjoyed the experience.

"Kong Hans Kaelder is located in one of the oldest buildings in Copenhagen. This cosy fine dining restaurant ffers classical French-Danish cuisine in a medieval atmosphere of a 500-year- old vaulted Gothic cellar. The menu is influenced by the seasons and therefore a visit in spring can differ enormously from the “winter-flavoured”-kitchen, although food is delicious irrespective of season!"

The Netherlands is a favorite place. I visit both Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Aside from the Coffee Shops [snicker] and the Red Light District [Amsterdam]...I enjoy canals, the many cyclists, food and the many books stores. One thing I remember on one of my many visits is following down the stairs in a book store and dislocating my right ankle. Yeah, I am a bit accident prone.

d’Vijff Vlieghen
[The Five Flies]

*If you visit, get the wine flight and cheese plate for desert. I remember when the Dutch gal delivered the cheese and she did a fantastic job speaking English until you came out with a "panic phrase like "warning!" when alerting to eat cheese top to bottom. The most subtle flavors top and going bold as you worked your way down.

The French Laundry

Ah yes, the most expensive restaurant I have ever eaten at! Located in Yountville... [Napa area]. Across the street from the restaurant is their private garden where they grow much of their food...it is open to the public to tour. Very nice touch! At the time I when I booked a reservation, I couldn't get in for like 4-5 months out! I was complaining to an attorney friend of mine who called a politician in San Francisco who called on my behalf. I got in within a week. I invited my attorney friend and one other...my treat. Mistake! What I wasn't prepared for what the price. I brought my own bottle of wine. Besides the corkage fee, and no other alcohol. The bill for three...brace yourself...$2,500

I determined that going to French Laundry is about an experience. Do not plan on feeling "full" because afterwards, We were all hungry and we went to grab a bite after. Mind you, all three of use are exceptionally fit and do not eat much to begin with. Don't get me wrong...the food was off-the-hook! Every entree was met with service that was much like a performance. The place settings, wine glasses, flatware...everything exquisite.

Since you will likely leave a bit hungry, nearby, the Bouchon Bakery.

About the French Laundry

Chef Thomas Keller visited Yountville, California, in the early 1990s to find a space to fulfill a longtime culinary dream: to establish a destination for fine French cuisine in the Napa Valley. In his travels, he came across a rustic two-story stone cottage. As he walked into the restaurant’s quaint courtyard, he knew it was where he had been headed throughout his career.

The French Laundry, a 1,600 square-foot structure constructed of river rock and timbers, was built as a saloon in 1900 by a Scottish stonemason. The building later served as a residence, and during the 1920s operated as a French steam laundry. In 1978, town mayor Don Schmitt and his wife Sally renovated the structure into a restaurant, which Keller then purchased in 1994.

The French Laundry is a member of French-based Relais & Chateaux, Relais Gourmands and Traditions & Qualité; organizations recognized for their dedication to maintaining the highest international standards for hospitality and culinary excellence.

Through The French Laundry’s menu, which changes daily, the restaurant commits itself to creating classic French cuisine with the finest quality ingredients, along with a similarly intense focus on impeccable guest service.

This is all outstanding David, cheers.

Just a couple of recommendations if I may:

1) Mirazur
Highly acclaimed and situated in Menton, France.
Restaurant gastronomique - Restaurant Menton - Mirazur

2) The Botafumeiro
There are severall and all are decent but the one in Barcelona can't be topped in my opinion. What quality.
BOTAFUMEIRO

3) Don Julio (as an Argentine I feel it is my obligation to educate people on the best beef out there!)
Parrilla Don Julio

Maastricht in the south of the Netherlands is a beautiful small city with some wonderful restaurants. I ate at this chateau some years ago with a friend who's wine club met here. They have fantastic caves as well. http://www.chateauhotels.nl/en/chateau-neercanne/home
