Thank-you for your suggestions, just as well we're stopping off at Maui on the way home for 4 days to wind down. I actually had thought of a train trip & the idea to Chicago & then a hire car sounds quite appealing. We want to get to Taos New Mexico to see friends, definately the grand canyon, chopper & river cruise..

I think you ought to plan for an additional week.

I think you might be right John, more like a month though.....

Washington D.C. - Very impressive city with so much history to see & most attractions are free.

San Francisco - one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
