slowly but surely production and labor costs are increasing in China which means factories will start moving to countries where labor is cheaper and less controlled. Im sure in the near future we will see factories popping up in India.

My Classe CP-800 preamp/DAC was made in China. The design was created by French Canadians. It's a stellar preamp and I've had no quality issues with it. I changed the digital board last fall myself to upgrade to MkII status and had the opportunity to open it up for closer inspection. No craftsmanship problems observed.

For many things the Chinese have gotten quite good and with the years of experience they've accrued in having all kinds of goods outsourced to them they're probably among the best at many areas of manufacturing. That said, I prefer to keep North Americans and especially Americans employed. I bought the CP-800 for its digital features and my regard for Classe.

I'll repeat that my Luxman SQ-N10 is a terrific little integrated amp and has been faultless.

Glenn - Unless the SQ-N10 is an exception, current Luxman gear is manufactured in Japan. I am certain of this regarding their exceptional C-900u control amp (linestage) which I own.

Believe all the current Luxman gear states "Designed in Japan" and is assembled in China. Luxman is owned by a couple of Chinese investors (brothers) these days and is part of the IAG Group IAG Group LTD.

While you are correct about Luxman's current Chinese ownership, quoting from the US distributor's website:

"Since 1925, Luxman has crafted audio products in Japan. Luxman products are designed in Japan; each part is carefully tested and evaluated with many custom-made parts, thus making the Luxman designs unique, special and one of a kind. Apart from the shared Power Supply, the amplifier designs are usually dual mono. The transformers are made in Japan to their specifications. Luxman even hand selects the color paint used on the resistors to identify value and tolerance based on extensive listening tests. The chassis is carefully tuned with both vibration and resonance being very carefully controlled to make them perform like a musical instrument. Finally, assembly and testing are carried out in Japan. Luxman's attention to detail is second to none."

From someone who live in China for 10 years.

Manufacturing in China does not have to mean a quality decline but it will if the company sponsoring it does not stay 100% on top of all aspects of the supply chain and production unit operations.

China has come along way but it has a long way to go to root out inherent corruption in many small and stepwise ways.

As an example...

A foreign manufacturer that thinks the local buyer in China won't buy cheap off alloy screws for their important part is out of their mind since the buyer may either be given an incentive to save money without other controls or in fact be totally corrupt and receiving a kick-back from the supplier.

No doubt major companies feel they are fully on top of things and certainly most are. However, China is still the Wild Wild West in many ways and you cannot let your guard down for a second.

Craig - were you a missionary?

When I was running an epi-plant in TX at the end of the 90's we had a Chinese company who wanted to "partner" with us. During a visit to their facility we were looking into their cleanroom production area when it was time for lunch. The workers got out their lunch pails, pulled off their hoods & gloves, etc., and sat down and ate. Needless to say, this particular facility had much to learn at that time.
