Default Grammys... Someone please explain

Can anyone explain why Lady Gaga won an award in 2019 for a song that came out in 2016?

Can anyone explain why there's a record of the year and an album of the year?

What a strange institution.

Beck's Colors also won. It's from October 2017.

I watched a bit of it, and come to the realization I have zero interest and have not heard of a lot of the names; Post Malone, Childish Gambino and similar

Default Grammy's - NYT: "They don't make music like they used to"

Comments on this years Grammy's -

A look at the loudness wars and some hope for quality recordings.

The link below has an analysis of many songs, past and present. Interesting.

Didn’t watch a minute of it.

Turned it on to hear that Childish Gambino won and turned it off.

I am officially old.

"When compact discs were introduced in the 1980s, one selling point was that they were capable of a greater dynamic range than vinyl records — yet the average pop recording today has a smaller dynamic range than records made during the analog era."

Strong statement, how true (measurement wise) one can only wonder.

Just like in the mid 70's I never cared about DR and knew nothing of it as a teenager, so do the young people of today know nothing or care about music's DR and compression.
As long as it plays on their phone, laptop/ipad and Alexa devices....it's cool.

Appreciate the responses but they are a bit off topic. Does anyone understand how these old songs and albums are eligible for a grammy years later?

I found this, but it's weak: https://www.grammy.com/grammys/awards/voting-process

"Recording Academy members and record companies enter recordings and music videos released during the eligibility year which they consider worthy of recognition in the GRAMMY Awards process."

Clearly that doesn't apply to what happened last night. Lady Gaga's "Joanne" was released in 2016. It's OVER TWO YEARS OLD!

Sorry to be cynical but perhaps it is the corrupt manner in which they do what is needed to stay relevant as an organization. I doubt there is a logical reason for it.

I remember having to look this up for clarity a long time ago:

-Record of the Year is awarded to the performer and the production team of a single song.
-Album of the Year is awarded to the performer and the production team of a full album.
-Song of the Year is awarded to the writer(s)/composer(s) of a single song.
