Hi VT Skier,

The S5 versus Q3 comparison was made on VAC Statement 450S amp and VAC Statement with a top of the line Metronome CD player, top of the line MIT cables. Same room, same electronics. The S5 is voiced differently than the Q series. Bass is more emphasized and Magico is going for an impactful sound. The Q series has higher resolution and refinement. The tweeter was seemingly better intergrated and lower in distortion in the Q3 compared to the S5. The Q series sounds a bit more coherent, made from the same "fabric" type of sound. I've also heard the S5 on Constellation Audio (but this was at a Show), and they sounded great!

I bought my Q3s before the S series came out, but I'm happy with my decision. I've got VAC Phi 200 monoblocks powering my Q3s and a VAC Renaissance preamp. I also have a Pass X350.5 and the extra power is appreciated on the Q3s, but I lose some detail, resolution and holographic imaging with the Pass amp. I might try Spectral since Magico recommends them so highly, or perhaps even upgrade to bigger VAC amps...

The S5 is a great speaker no doubt.

Hope this helps.
