-E-, that's a real beauty. I have been planning on buying a Synology NAS for too many years now. I love the size of the 1813+, but I think the 1513+ would be nice to start with.
Congrats! |

-E-
I'm about to pull the trigger on an 1813+ and have been doing a lot of reading since this will be quite a jump from my current 2 bay NAS. I'm sure a 1513+ would suit my immediate needs. But this time I'm hoping to buy a bigger cage than what I need so I can just add drives as my data storage needs grow. That said, I was curious about your choice of drives. I've been on both the synology and western digital websites looking at HDD compatibility. From your picture, I see you bought the WD30EFRX "NAS" level of HDD (according to WD) but not the "Enterprise" level WD3000F9YZ HDD. As someone pointed out earlier, the NAS level drives were on the WD compatibility list for the 1513+ and other 5 bay NAS units, but not listed on the 1813+. The only differences noted (for us noobies) is the extended warranty and a vibration sensor which much be important for rack mounting. Obviously, you must not be concerned or you would have bought the other. But since you were recommending against the 4TB drives, I thought I would ask if you considered the enterprise drives for your 1813+? Thanks,

Considered? Yes. However the Reds do just fine and give you a very good warranty. Black/RE differences are basically a permanent 7200rpm spin and 5-year warranty.
Subnote: friends don't let friends do RAID5.

Thanks for the quick reply! Being new to this, I assumed I would do Synology Hybrid Raid with 2 redundancy and let the machine optimize things for me. Of course that's unless you have a better suggestion for me...
One other question: If I get a UPS with a network connection for the shutdown instead of USB, does that allow me to shut down both my NAS and desktop which is most likely also going to be on?

Always start with R10 and then go down from there... Just provides the max performance and a theoretical maximum fault tolerance.

Ehhhh, not usually. Those types usually have fairly layered client/server software installs which usually doesn't correspond to working effectively on a NAS OS.
