There are no perfect hard-drive based systems that cannot fail; all hard drives will fail at some point in time; it's a fact. A good way to cover yourself is to regularly create two backups, keep one at home, and keep one at a buddy's place. This is what some pro photographers do for their digital image assets. The chances that two backups in remote locations would suffer a directory corruption or head crash simultaneously are close to infinitesimal.
