I'm planning to upgrade my headphone rig and was wondering if instead of a dedicated headphone amp (I'm using one from Meier) I should consider a speaker pre / amp with a very good headphone out.

That way I preserve the option to had speakers at a later stage. I know the Leben CS300 is one option. Any other suggestion suitable both for speakers and headphones? Budget up to 10.000 euros / 13.000 dollars.

My source is the Ayre DAC.

Luxman is another nice choice for an integrated amplifier. And Peachtree and Cary Audio both offer less expensive options, in some cases.

Thanks. Just found a recent Stereophile issue that reviews the Leben and the Luxman. Very positive about both options, leans slightly towards the Leben as the best one.

While I've never heard the Luxman, I did own a Leben combo and loved it. I recently switched to Shindo for more of that lovin' feeling'

I have the Luxman SQ-N100 which I use with both headphones and a small pair of speakers (PSB Imagine Minis). Sound is wonderful with headphones, very full and balanced.

Any clue on how does compare the headphone out from the Leben / Luxman with the headphone out from McIntosh?
