Meridian 568 as DAC

Hello all,

I'm wondering if any of you Meridian aficionados have replaced or preferred a newer DAC than the 568 for 2 channel audio?

Current system:
Squeezebox Touch - wired, flac files
Audio Research VSI55
Sonus Faber Cremona Auditor

I think you will gain alot by going reference 800 series. An 818 + MC200 + iPad is an excellent starting point to sonic bliss.

V1 of the 818 can be had for good price while the new 818v2 is current on the market. You can also factor in an upgrade to V2 if you want for later..

The MC200 can store 1TB of your music files. And more MD600 can be added if you need more space later on.

The 'old' 568 is a pretty good DAC in its own and still holds well against many-most of the modern units.

Some tricks he does...

-decoding stereo PCM signals up to 24b/96k (coaxial/optical). Ok this is easy.

-be used as a preamp and active filter for 2.2 systems (yes stereo subwoofers! something to be discovered!). Needs configuration software, but easy.

-optimise resolution (dither) for 16-18-20-24 bit signals. You need the configuration program for this and define the input for bit number, can do with phantom sources. Trickier.

-change its character by using different DSP firmware files. Even trickier, but there are around options, both from inside Meridian and outsourced, so that you can use the original ones, newer 'apodising' ones (yes!) or even other interesting and favourite flavours...

-last but not least: sounds always great! Both detailed and smooth/velvety (whatever filter you use).
