I find a lot of classical recordings, and quite a few jazz albums have very fine to excellent sound.
They don't have the largest budgets for recording engineers and studios, but often the passion of the recording/mixing engineer is the major factor there...

“Jazz at the Pawnshop” is tremendously satisfying, even with the background noise of footsteps, plates and glasses clanking, which only adds to the charm and authenticity of that moment in time. Last edited by PHC1; 06-27-2019 at 04:25 PM. |

Then there is the Abbey Road collection of outboard gear, and hundreds of microphones, some dating back to the ‘30’s. I think the art of getting great sound is an extremely difficult pursuit.

Some of those classic microphones, especially of the tube variety are highly coveted today and many try to duplicate them with modern designs. The prices some of those mikes fetch today are rather serious. Besides, I doubt there is anything Abbey Roads cannot afford if they need it.

Then there is the simplicity of one mic recordings like through Sound Liason.
I bet more can be done if one wanted to, and this means benefiting systems perceived much less then we all own and fight over. |
