Classic 3 up & running.
Spent some time today mounting the Shelter 501 cartridge and setting up the tonearm. I used what came with the VPI and I'm close but am pretty sure I need some fine tuning. The uni-pivot arm seems a but more difficult to balance than the Audioquest PT-9. Detail, mid's, and sound stage are good but I thinking I'm a bit thin on the bass. I think I'm going to order the SoundSmith's Counter "Intuitive" as it will make keeping track of tracking force and azimuth.

Don,
I'm about to pull the trigger on VPI and can't decide on classic or classic 3. Is it worth to spend the extra money ? Thanks in advance |

If I had not found the 3 for a little over $1K off MSPR I would have looked at the Classic 2. But with the Classic 3 I don't think I'll ever need anything else

Don,
I haven't heard your Shelter so I can't say if thats why you're a little shy in the bass, but I do know that my Classic has had great bass with a DV20H and now using a Soundsmith Zephyr !! |

Don.......The slightly thin bass may be due to the VTA not being quite right. Try lowering the tail of the tonearm slightly. The general rule of thumb is tail up equals greater treble, and tail down equals greater bass. It doesn't take much of a difference in the vertical tracking angle to make a difference in what you hear. Keep in mind that every adjustment made on the tone arm, including tracking force adjustments affect every other adjustment, so when changing one perimeter you need to check the other perimeters to ensure those adjustments remain correct.

I have a shelter 501 and the bass is very good. I agree with Dan try adjusting the VTA and let the cantilever break in a bit.

I have a vpi classic, it will be the last table i buy. Just a wonderful performer, and not to fussy on placement. Just make sure the stand is built well.
