Default Dorm Room Speakers - JBL 104?

Grand-daughter headed off to college in the fall. Am thinking a decent set of powered speakers for her dorm room would be a nice graduation gift. The LS50s look good and get great reviews, but I'm thinking that may be too much in size in these days of 'personal' electronics. Plus, am wondering how much time kids spend in their dorm rooms. Am sure it is quite different from 50yr ago when I was there with a reciever, TT & a pair of large Advents. These small JBLs get a couple of good reviews and seem to fit the bill as a good place to start. Not much $$ and can always upgrade. Anyone heard them or tried anything similar?

You might want to ask her what she wants. Maybe a small Bluetooth speaker or a set of nice cans. It’s not like when you and I went to university when every room had a decent stereo.

I would ask her what she would be most interested in. I found it much better to have a pair of closed back headphones than worry about speakers. I lugged a small set of JBL computer speakers around when I was in college and really didn't find much of a need for them. I carried the headphones with me everywhere, though. Just avoid the typical Beats or Bose that are overpriced and probably don't provide the best sound quality.

I remember the days when we would lug around Jensen speakers and hook up to the guy down the hall who had a nice Marantz receiver and Garrard TT. Then I got an Ampex cassette player and you didn't have to worry about dozing off and getting up to turn the LP over.

Having been in and out of university dorm rooms for the past eleven years, you don't see speakers getting moved in or out these days...

Funny, today my wife and youngest daughter were back on her college campus moving out of the dorms for the year. Everything is online until the end of the semester.

This is totally of topic but your question reminded me of a time in college when I had a roommate that I knew was not a good fit. I played nothing but Frank Zappa for two days, maybe three. He left and got another room.

We were definitely more into what we could get out of our system then the kids are nowadays. When a new Tull album or Zeppelin etc. would come out, we would gather at one of the dorm rooms and we would put together our best system pieces and listen maybe 3 or 4 times. No words were spoken until both sides were played.

Thanks for the responses. Suggestion and a gift card to Amazon may be the best option.
