Default New Stones Box Set 1971-2016

I'm thinking about doing a preorder of this new RS box set. Anyone have the full 411 on this.

I'm most interested in how the transfers were done. Direct from the master tapes? Or, did they make digital files (i.e. 24/96) from the master tapes.

The relevant quote from the description on Music Direct puts it this way.

"Every album has been lovingly remastered and cut at revelatory half-speed at Abbey Road Studios from vinyl-specific original tape transfers designed to get the very best possibly sound from the format."

What is a "vinyl specific original tape transfer?"

It’s from digital masters. I’ve been reading about it over on the Steve Hoffman Forums....there’s a pretty good thread about it. Sounds like a good value if you don’t already have most of the albums. The problem for me is that about the only ones I’m missing on vinyl is Voodoo Lounge and Bridges to Babylon which command a small fortune on eBay since they’re out of print. Not sure how worth it it would be since you can find clean originals for fairly cheap up until Steel Wheels, but if you really want VL or BTB, you’ll have to grab the box set or pony up some $$$ on eBay.

Thanks for the info. I just had a fair suspicion that was the case. Think I'm going to pass since I already own just about all of the titles anyway.

I preordered. The new mastering by Miles at abbey road is enough of a reason for me to jump in, 1/2 mastered and I agree the source will be hi-res digital “sourced” from the original analogue, where appropriate. The mastering is new, even Exile which was just remastered for the 1/2 speed mastered release a couple years ago —- that version was based off a previous master w/ digital compression. Not so with this one.
