Continuously playing records?
Do you think it creates a problem for the stylus, cartridge, turntable, if you play records for continuous hours, maybe even 8 or 10 continuous hours?

No, I don't think so. Why would you worry about the turntable being affected?

I often listen to albums for 6 or 7 hours. Especially on Sunday afternoons.

Just not the same record. My vinyl advisors recommend against that.

Because of boredom? And what is a vinyl advisor? Does Ivan sell those?

With somewhere between 80 pounds to 26 tons of pressure per square inch (experts vary?) the stylus traveling at roughly 1 knot can heat up vinyl walls considerably. Some claim the heat and pressure can deform the groove. Some claim repeatedly doing that does not give vinyl enough time to fully return/recover to its original form. I don't know if this or some variant is true. Never heard reports of such damage nor experienced it after, say, 2-3 repeated plays, but there it is. When a diamond stylus with that much pressure and speed smashes into a groove-residing 10 micron sized rock, damage can occur - so clean your records and check that stylus after every side. Doesn't speak directly to the issue, but interesting: http://shure.custhelp.com/app/answer...nd-record-wear Last edited by tima; 07-12-2017 at 12:22 AM. |
