Perhaps it's how the data is received and processed? which has lots to do with timing. I think that is the discussion; each method has a way of handling the data that may have some impact on the fidelity of the sound.
The SPDIF signal carries not only the data (1's and 0's) but also a clock signal.

It is the clock signal that gets distorted. There has been several very well written papers on interface jitter published in Stereophile.

Here is one which is 20+ yaers old, that is still relevant:

thanks.

I wonder why there are so few stand alone, consumer hifi Clocks and thousands of DACs...

Because there are very few DACs that have Clock Input.

Low demand = low supply.

Resurrecting an old thread, but I have a similar question using the DAC on my mcd1100. I know the recommendation is for coaxial, but looking at my manual for the 1100 is lists.

Digital input sample rate:

Coaxial 16, 24-bit/32-96khz
Optical 16, 24-bit/32-192khz

So the optical offers a higher resolution, technically? But, coaxial would still be the recommended connection? I’m looking to run a media streamer through the DAC on my 1100 then to my pre.

Thank you,

Jacob

Yes, but my only options are coaxial or Tos. Sorry, probably should have mentioned that.

Thanks

Jacob.......The McIntosh D1100 manual says this: Digital Input Sample Rate Coaxial, Optical and AES/EBU: 44.1kHz to 192kHz, 24-Bit.

There is no reason to use optical if you have available coaxial or AES/EBU inputs. Typically an optical signal will have a higher jitter rate than the coaxial inputs. Remember, the AES/EBU input is a coaxial input in a balanced configuration. Both the coaxial and the AES/EBU inputs should deliver a cleaner signal.

If you plan to listen to DSD files through the D1100 you will need to also have a USB connection between a compatible transport and your DAC. You can have coaxial and a USB cables connected simultaneously from the transport to the D1100.

Thanks for the reply Dan. I’m currently streaming Tidal MQA at 24/96 via coaxial and the quality is pretty nice. Im using a WW silver 7. Anyone notice an improvement with the platinum WW coaxial?
