Old Thread revival.
Just bought a Cortese F2a from an original owner. Waiting on shipping...(a long few days). It will pair with my Aurieges MM and GPA604-8HII speakers. It will replace a very nice 45 amp. I hope it will compare favorably. I will post again upon receipt of amp. |

Received amp yesterday. Plugged it in, tubes lit up.....no sound. Ugh!! Did some further inspection after, changing interconnects, speaker wire, inputs, preamp, speakers etc... 45 minutes later I discovered that the tube that is inside the amp had disconnected with it contact point on the top of it during shipping. Fixed that. Now it works. Put on some music and thought not really any better than my 45 amp I have been using and maybe even not as good. Had to go out. Came back later and sat down for an extended listen. Started sounding better etc. About an hour and half in I was just sitting there in amazement. I have never heard music sound this good. Holy Crap!!! It is hard to describe but music that I am very familiar with seemed to slow down. Not talking about the pitch but it was like time slowed down and it allowed you to hear everything, especially the dark background between the notes and instruments. Like i said it is hard to describe. Absolutely amazed!!!

Do any Cortese owners here know the correct bias settings for their amps?

Cortese 300B (Cetron). How many does that make?
Lovely sound, of course, never taxing. |

I have the new tube rectified Cortese along with the new version Monbrison and DeVore O/96s. The problem is, the bass from the O/96s is overloading my rather small space; a 12'x12' section of a 17'x12' room. I previously had O/93s and never had a problem with the bass, so I thought the O/96s would also work. I guess I was wrong.
I also had Audio Note AN-E SPe HE speakers right before the O/96s and in hindsight, they actually worked better in my room than the O/96s (which I thought would be a better match impedance wise with the Cortese). So I'm on the hunt for some other speakers in the small to medium size that work well with the 16 ohm taps of the Shindo Cortese. I've already researched the Altec options (Valenicia, 604e) and there is no way to fit them in my space. So are there any other speakers that have a full sound (~40Hz bass) that are efficient enough and have an easy impedance load to work well with the Cortese? |

I don’t think a silver cable will fix this issue. The speakers are just pressurizing the room too much.

How about Shindo Lafite field-coil. Living stereo NYC website shows used one on sale right now.

I feel like those would have the same issues with bass. Also don’t know if they’d be good for the various types of music I listen to.
