I find that I know next to nothing on most subjects myself. There was a time when I was really focused on all things audio, but I let my attention drift elsewhere for more than a few years and now I'm lost....
When I left-click on your username, the option of sending a PM is not there like on other members. I tried to send a PM with another method and I got a message saying you had elected not to receive PMs. There's a box under User CP>Edit Options that needs to be checked to Enable PMs. Just a guess??? |

Just acquired some custom-sized 2" thick red oak butcher block shelves from
Butcher Block Countertops | Wood Stair Treads and found a wood worker in town who will make the legs, assemble the rack and finish it--probably an oil finish, yet to be decided. The "boards" will arrive in about three weeks, so I'm figuring on getting the thing done by mid October. Hoping it turns out to be a very functional, robust and handsome piece of furniture. In the mean time, I've got the materials and drawings together for the brass adjustable feet and will post pictures as I progress with that. I think I'm going to go with a combination of 50 Duro sorbothane sandwiched with ABS disks for the bottom that contacts the carpet so as not to connect the rack too solidly to the floor. At first I was thinking of making spikes, but this thing is going to weigh about 200 pounds, plus I'm going with granite plates on each shelf and the components (hope the floor holds!), so it just seemed to me that spikes would not be the answer for isolation purposes. I don't even begin to know what I'm doing--just muddling along.

I finally got around to machining the leveling feet for my rack from the brass materials pictured earlier. There is a good 1/2 inch of adjustment, so that should be adequate. Pretty tedious making four of each part.....
I decided to go with feet rather than spikes because the wooden rack itself weighs about 200 lbs. (!) and with all the components on it, including the 75 lb. REF 150, and granite plates, it would be one stout item. Since it is on carpet, once it has compressed under the feet I don't think it's going to be too bouncy, and with each component being isolated as well it should be solid. It's not like I have jack hammers rattling the windows in the listening room. More on that with trial and error. The long flanged tubular piece fits very snugly in a centered hole in the bottom of each 3-1/2 inch square red oak leg, and will be glued in with construction cement and two #8 1-1/4 inch wood screws will keep them from twisting. Hopefully the glue will stay flexible to help dampen vibrations as will a gasket between the wood and brass. In addition, the 1/2"-20 threaded rod will be epoxied into the foot (far left, bottom of the picture) to help deaden vibration transfer as well as allow the use of the lock nut without unscrewing everything! The rack itself is completed in raw red oak, and I am doing a dark walnut Danish oil finish on it during the next couple of weeks. Pics will follow when completed.

Thanks, Dan. This is one of those projects that I both looked forward to and dreaded at the same time. I'm anxious to hear if it makes much sonic difference.
