I bought both pieces at the same time and received a great deal. The equipment was in new, unopened condition. I believe I was very lucky and would not take a chance again.

Have purchased three high-end items (TT, TA & pair of monobloc amps) from MSS HiFi over the past three years and have always gotten what I paid for. While their attitude and communication was not always the best and their shipping not as quick on the amps as I would have wanted, they offered good value and I was happy.

There are a couple of posts on the AK forum about very poor factory support for warranty issues on new gear that has been dragging on for many months. The factory does, indeed, offer voltage change support. Or used to do so. So it is reasonable that it is a problem with the factory. While MSS HiFi could do a better job of communicating, even owners of new gear seem to be having a problem getting decent factory support in 2011. Involving attorneys is always a last resort. Picking up the phone and calling MSS might help.

I would think that the matter should also be reported to the Police. While a civil dispute, if the goods never existed or the seller never intended to deliver it is fraud in the criminal sense. While an overworked and under resourced police department may not have much interest in what is essentially a small civil claim I have found recalcitrant/unscrupulous vendors dislike the attention they get, even in passing, from the local constabulary.

It may be useful to have an attorney do this for your friend since he is out of the USA. A civil claim is obviously the next step. Although I concur with the last poster's advice of picking up the phone first.

Obviously Johnny Boey is a thorough bastard of the first order - if you are out of the USA it would appear from the forums that the chances of receiving goods is 50/50. I know in Australia he has taken a few people for some $$. If he were in Sydney, I'd do it for the sport.

First, very sorry for your unfortunate circumstances... I hate when these things happen...

Seems to me that if it had been a straight forward simple transaction..that everything probably would be okay... however, having to change the voltage is probably what threw the proverbial monkey wrench into the issue...

I can't explain why or why not MSS couldn't do the switch, my guess..is they are simply an in and out dealer.. period.

IMHO whenever you are dealing with a volume and apparently discount 3rd party dealer... apply the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid).... any deviation from is almost guaranteed to results in hiccups, delays..and outright frustration..

I'm not sure if getting a lawyer is necessarily the best thing.... maybe..

I'm sure Ivan knows exactly what the background gist of this situation is... and I would heed whatever he says.....

Jerome

I bought some cables from Joey a couple of weeks ago. Professionally packaged and shipped fedex. They got here perfect. Yes, Joey's language and communication style is unqiue, or maybe that is normal for a New Yorker

MSS I believe do most of their business buying demo / stk from dealers that cannot move their inventory or need to move their inventory.

I am guessing that doing the change from 120 to 240 volts has required MSS to ship back to the dealer, then to the factory, or some combination of both.

I see they are still advertising the 1.2kw's, but on 4 - 6 weeks lead time, which is probably the timeframe your friend is going to wait.

I purchased an ARC Ref5 from Johnny Boey a couple years ago. Her told me it was new, however he couldn't sell it as new. I received it in great condition, however it had 280 hours on it. I was OK since it looked like new and break-in is 600 hours. I then had a problem with the system. It made a large popping noise and emitted smoke. I sent Johnny a note and asked if he could help... Never got a reply. I sent it to ARC and they fixed the until and didn't charge me. When they sent it back the service report said the large tube wasn't stock. I ordered/paid for a new tube. I decided to never do business with him again.

Just the idea of buying anything from an idiot who uses the name PIMP in his business goes against my grain. It speaks volumes about his concept of integrety. No thank you.

Johnny Boey will be pushing up daisies one day when he screws the wrong person. His next fast move could easily be his last move. It's a shame we don't still use frontier justice. In those days, if you stole a man's horse and were caught, you were hanged from the nearest oak tree.
