Default MX120 On The Way

This morning I purchased a brand new McIntosh MX120 for my studio home theater. It should arrive soon. I will take my C2300 preamp out of the studio system, and put the MX120 in its place. I will continue to use the MC352 for the JBL LSR6332 speakers (front left, front right). I have ordered two additional JBL LSR6328P bi-amplified speakers for the left and right surrounds, and will use the two JBL LSR6328P bi-amplified speakers I have for the center channel along with the JBL LSR6312SP powered subwoofer.

This will be a great theater set up. The JBL LSR6328P bi-amplified speakers use Class A-B amps with 250 watts on the woofer, and 120 watts on the tweeter, and feature room mode correction controls as part of the electronic crossover. They are excellent sounding, and quite powerful speakers. The MX120 will feed signals to all four of the JBL LSR6328P's, with the center channel signal split to feed both LSR6328P's that are used for the center channel. The LSR6312SP powered subwoofer has a 300 watt internal amplifier with room mode correction controls built into it, as well. The MC352 will drive the JBL LSR6332 monitors since they are passive speakers.

I have already put my two LSR6328P speakers into service as the center speakers, and built an angled speaker stand to support the LSR6312SP subwoofer and the two LSR6328's. The stand tilts the speakers back, and puts the entire seating area of the couch on axis with the drivers. I am presently feeding the line level from the Yamaha RX-V2700 surround receiver to feed the two LSR6328P center channel speakers, and using the Yamaha's amps to drive the two JBL LSR6332's on the front, and the two JBL Control 5's on the surrounds. The JBL Control 5's will be replaced with the two new JBL LSR6328P speakers as soon as they arrive along with the new wall brackets. The LSR6328P's weigh 39 pounds each. The wall brackets for the Control 5 speakers will not support that much weight, so new brackets will have to be installed. I will be using the Omnimount 60.0 WB.

Right now, set up with the Yamaha RX-V2700 surround receiver, the home theater system sounds very good, although I am expecting some nice improvements with the new MX120, new surround speakers, and incorporating the MC352 into the front speakers. More to come when the MX120 and two JBL LSR6328P suround speakers arrive. I love this hobby. What a blast.

Congrats Dan,

You are going to enjoy the MX120 . I have set mine up for Bray for movies with Cinema 1 and Bray2 for concerts using music 1 which is prologicII and panarama adjusted for perfect balance. I also have TV and TV2 set up for movies vs sports. It really allows you to customize and save settings for different type of media. Where did you get yours ?

Congrats Dan. Not to knock on Yamaha, but having upgraded from a Yammie receiver as pre-amp to the MX136, I'm confident you will be very satisfied with this upgrade.

I have no doubt the McIntosh MX120 will produce excellent results. I can't slight the Yamaha RX-V2700. It has some very useful features that the MX120 does not have, like HDMI 2.1a for up to 8 channel audio with video over HDMI, so no fiber optics is necessary for audio. The Yamaha also employs a calibrated microphone and auto calibration, setting up the speaker sizes, distances, delays, and EQ using seperate parametric equalization of each active channel. The McIntosh MX120 is sans these very nice features.

Of course, the MX120 has plenty to show for its price tag, and I have no doubt it will shine in my HT setup. Naturally, the all new MX150 has the auto calibration, EQ, distance, delay, and the long awaited Room Perfect system, but at $12K I'll wait. Eventually the MX150 will go on the used equipment block at a more manageable figure, and then will attract my attention.

I am also going to wait on the MX150. When ever new technology comes out the first generation always has some revisions and tweeking done until they get it right. Hopefully the MX150 will be great from the beginning .
