Bob... today as an experiment, I replaced a WW Platinum Starlight 7 USB and installed a new Alpha USB cable in its place.

I think Puma Cat was messing with you.

The Venom USB is quite a good cable for little money. It help me get much better results from my bedroom system. It was revealing enough to let me know I needed a better power cord for my DAC. I have the same DAC in the living room and splurged for a 2nd Delta NR power chord. This has really brought out the best from my DAC. I run PS Audio Nuwave DSDs.

As everyone recommends, try before you buy.

Actually, I wasn't. I think the Shunyata Alpha USB brings more of an improvement than a new DAC would. Or preamp...

I could be wrong, but I think Ivan's comment is supportive of that, as well.

I agree. I felt Puma Cat's review was heartfelt and as real as he could make it. I know Ivan is a dealer and perhaps his comments could should be taken with a grain of salt but, he's never given me even an inkling of self serving advice. Every time he's recommended a piece of gear to me it's been spot on.

Today I ordered the Alpha USB. It should be here in two weeks or so and I can't wait to post my impressions.

Yes, you are right. My review was heartfelt, and....accurate. I'm a scientist by nature and profession, and, while I fully grant that the experience of listening to music is very much a subjective experience, I also strive to be as objective as posible in my reporting of results. I don't have any agenda other than to accurately convey what I hear and my experiences to my fellow AA'ers. For example, I once bought a Audioquest Carbon firewire cable for connecting my music file hard drive to my Mac Mini. Didn't make one bit of difference, at all, despite what the dealer said. Ethernet cables and USB cables, on the other make, make a notable and perceivable difference. As do the power supplies for streamers, DACs, preamps, etc.

As an example, I use Fujifilm mirrorless cameras for my professional motorsports work. Yesterday, I just shot 2000 frames of motor racing with the new Olympus OM-D E-M1X pro body mirrorless. The camera has a new AI-based AF system specifically configured for shooting motorsports. And I gotta say, as much as I love my Fujifilm gear, its AF system just cannot match the new Oly's AI-based autofocus system for shooting motor racing. The data is the data and the facts are the facts.
