While governors across the country issue statewide “shelter-in-place” orders over the virus, the Tennessee governor has refrained from doing so, with only parts of the state shut down, including Knoxville County where businesses were ordered to close though many remained open.

Other states have also reported an increase in suicide-related incidents as the virus continues to take its toll on the nation’s mental health. Crisis hotlines nationwide are surging with calls from Massachusetts to Oregon, both of which are states with “shelter-in-place” orders implemented, keeping people out of work and isolated at home.

Loneliness kills. I believe that. I wonder where the USA ranks on the list of the loneliest countries in the world but I bet it is quite high. In the event of a quarantine, if you add loneliness as a pre-existing condition, the likely result is not good.

“More People Died of Suicide Than Coronavirus in Tennessee Last Week”.

The nation's suicide rate has been rising over many years while Tennessee's suicide rate has topped the national rate (even before COVID-19).

Per The 2019 "Status of Suicide in Tennessee" report: statistics show a 24.4 percent increase in suicide by children ages 10-17 between 2016-2017, and a 54.5 percent increase between 2015-2017. In 2017, there were 51 suicides by children 10-17, and 24 more when 18- and 19-year-olds are added. The total climbs to 142 when young adults up to age 24 are added.

(Tennessee Bureau of Investigation) Approximately 70,000 Tennesseans are addicted to opioids; fentanyl is now involved in more than half of fatal opioid overdoses. North and South Knoxville have been hit hard by opioids. Many states are gaining ground on the opioid crisis, but not Tennessee.
