The Dave was very different from the Berkeley, Aurender and Esoteric units I compared it against in a brief audition. I believe that different individuals would happily choose any one of the four depending on what they were looking for.

The filtering in the Chord Dave has allot of pre and post ringing that would give it a rather euphoric sound signature. At least this is my experience from using the HQPlayer filter modelled after the Chord filters. I really enjoyed that particular HQPlayer filter it made some crappy recordings sound far less crappy.

I would throw the Mcintosh D1100 in the ring as well. Dual mono and quad-balanced. I am enjoying mine so far.

In all seriousness from an engineering standpoint the Dave is an outstanding DAC.

It has resolution to over 20 bits, which is state of the art today. By using FPGA's it's designer, Rob Watts, was able to create some unique and very effective high speed filters and noise shapers.

As consumers we are in the golden age of digital music reproduction. Performance is increasing while costs are decreasing. What was expensive state of the art a few years ago is no longer competitive today.

There are standout offerings, truly differentiated, at multiple price points.

I look forward to auditioning DAVE.

Tom

I auditioned the Dave a few weeks ago against my K-01X and while the K-01X is fantastic, and provides more than just a DAC, the Dave did sound better.

That is what I found during a very short audition. I just ordered the DAVE yesterday (before the $900 price increase hits) and it should be here in three weeks.

There is really no risk on my part as my selling dealer has offered to take it back with a full refund within 30 days if I don't like it.
