After spending 10 years in Asia, I am totally comfortable with subtitles. I have watched many Chinese and Korean movies on ferries, trains and airplanes.

Funny enough, there is an Aussie movie titles ‘Kenny’ that forced me to put the subtitles on as many of the characters were unintelligible to me. Ha!

Highly recommended!

I'm coming around to this view as well...to shut out films due to subtitles is to miss out. My collection is growing rapidly.

I have Train to Busan as well, in my digital (VUDU) library. It's a wild ride indeed! (pun intended) The lead man from The Suspect (Gong Yoo) also stars in Train to Busan.

Another good one is The Man from Nowhere. It's violent, but the story, and the little girl who the star sets out to rescue, pulls on your heart strings, big time.

You know? I've taken that KTX train to Busan (from Seoul). I didn't experience a zombie apocalypse

I'll have to check out the movie.

I'm sure you will be familiar with the locations in the film. I was surprised I liked this movie so much. I guess subtitles are an individual thing. I have never had an issue myself.

I watched The Man from Nowhere last night. It was very entertaining and I especially found the mobsters to be comical. Not sure if they were meant to be comical...lol. Thanks for the recommendation.

I am fortunate to be well traveled and often see exact locations I have been to in movies. When watching movies I often get really excited and say "OMG! I have been to that exact location in real life!!!"...lol.

Here are a couple more very good films from South Korea. There were among the first films from the genre I watched that sparked my interest. Both are based on actual serial murder cases in South Korea, both recommended....

I just installed a new Nordost Power Cable to Apple TV, and opened up Netflix to see if what the difference may be.

Netflix displayed, “Operation Chromite” - showing General McArthur and the narrative of south goes behind North lines.

Played it for a bit and it appears the Korean portions are subtitled in English and the American versions are English, no subtitles - making it easier for at least me to watch.

Side note: the power cable appears to darken the blacks in the picture, and allow performance to kick it up a notch, need to qualify to make sure it was not because of a reset.

I thought these two recent R2 releases were excellent, both directed by Park Hoon-jung and starring Choi Min-sik (Old Boy, Lady Vengeance, Lucy):
- New World (2013) https://www.eurekavideo.co.uk/montage/new-world
- The Tiger (2015) www.eurekavideo.co.uk/montage/tiger-old-hunters-tale

Both contain graphic violence. The Tiger has some truly awful on-screen animal deaths, but all animals are of the furry digital/animatronic variety and their deaths weren’t gratuitous IMO. Like many modern movies, some of the digital effects were a bit overdone (fast moving animals didn’t look totally real) but the high-quality story/acting/direction/soundtrack made up for that.

A few have mentioned Oldboy (2003), which I also rate highly, but note this is part 2 of the Park Chan-wook The Vengeance trilogy, so also check out Sympathy for Mr Vengeance (2002) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005).

With the exception of Train to Busan, every South Korean film I’ve seen in the last decade or so has been at minimum very good. (Sorry to the other posters, but I found Busan repetitious, the endless screaming tedious and couldn’t wait for it to end. I did enjoy some of it though, like the train towing the zombies).

I also thought Man from Nowhere (2010) excellent.

One way I discover a lot of movies (and music) that I’d otherwise overlook is browsing Amazon’s “Customers who bought this also bought” list, e.g. load The Tiger b-r and check out some of the five star titles listed. Easy to fill a basket in no time.

I watched The Chaser and Memories of Murder. I enjoyed them both. It is interesting to see the cultural differences such as how the suspects have no access to a lawyer and how everyone sleeps on the floor. I could save so much money sleeping on the floor...lol.
