For some reason I don't have pictures of my actual Cary CAD-211AE amp, but I DO have pictures of the internals!
Rear of chassis. Front of chassis, with the horizontally mounted cats eye tube. As you can see, it won't be an easy proposition to replace that tube when it wears out. Note the burnt out resistor at the 9 o'clock position on the bottom 845 tube socket (i.e. the big white round socket in the second picture). I smelt the magic smoke coming out of the amp and quickly turned it off, but it was too late. Lesson learnt: don't attempt to mount tubes when you've had too much to drink. You might cause a short circuit and blow up your amp! Cost of repair: $100. Thank God!! Those of you who haven't yet opened up your amps to look inside will be reassured that it uses quality parts. |

Joeling, I'm confused - so what monoblocks do you use to drive your speakers?

I blew my 805AE too when a bad 845 installed. Had to send to the mothership for repair.

I use 2 sets of amps depending on my mood. Cary SLP98+Cary 805 or ARC ref40+REF110. Still trying out tubes for the Cary, installed some ShuGuang CV181 last night but no warming to their sound.

Hey Keith, can recommend some good 6SN7 for the 805's ?

Hi Joe, depends on the type of sound you are after. I used RCA red base 6SN7's - clear, dynamic, and a nice midrange tone. The RCA black base have a more pronounced midrange tone but are not as transparent as the red base. Grey Glass RCA's - avoid.
I also quite like the General Electric 6SN7's - these are even more transparent than the RCA's, sound even faster, have better dynamics, and are more neutral. I have tried tubes by Electro-Harmonix, Sylvania, Tung-Sol, and the standard no-name tubes that come with the Cary. All are so-so. The only well known tube I would avoid is the Mullard. It is muddy and slow sounding.
