Default Dynaudio M3 speakers ? ....

There is a local pair for sale. They look like studio monitors. Anyone know anything about them? Thanks!

M3P
3 way (five drivers) main-monitor for demanding engineers

Designed for continuous high power operation in a correctly constructed acoustic space, the M3 represents the fruit of a research and development program aimed at elevating main monitors above the realm of modified PA speakers. A pair of 300mm bass drivers are perfectly complemented by two 150mm piston midrange drivers employing massive 75mm coils. High frequencies are accommodated by a high power version of the 28mm ESOTAR T-330 DA dome tweeter, which enjoys a reputation as the finest dome tweeter available. All drivers are ferrofluid cooled, a benefit only made possible on low frequency drivers by the use of custom designed ferrofluid compounds applied to very tightly tolerated voice coil gaps – a feature absolutely unique to Dynaudio Acoustics.

The result is a very clean, dynamic and powerful speaker in which common problems, such as cone break up, thermal compression and phase misalignment have been almost eliminated. Frequency response is full and flat, and the overall transparency of sound leaves no doubt that the M3 truly advances the art of monitoring at high levels without sacrificing quality at more relaxing volume.

Levels from 85 to 120dBA exhibit essentially identical timbre allowing total confidence in mix decisions regardless of monitoring level.

Passive or Active
The M3 Main Monitor is available in both Passive and Active versions. Both versions employ the same sophisticated impedance corrected passive crossovers between midrange drivers and tweeter. The Passive version has internal links for simple adjustment of low frequency levels, and is primarily intended for user installation on rigid stands within a control room, although soffit mounting is entirely feasible. The bi-amped Active system uses an active external crossover offering full equalization capabilities together with dual-band electronic driver protection.

This is an older pro audio monitor designed for near-field use and not really suitable for home use. It's designed for use in heavily damped recording or mastering environments and uses a now discontinued, older Esotar tweeter. Not something you want, really.

Thank you very much. I did not know anything about it and was curious. I appreciate it very much Stephen.

Joe...If the price is right, well worth a demo!. Used to have a pair of the BM15P's. A very nice speaker at its price point.

Wouldn't be concerned about the older Esotar tweeter being discontinued.

It is an excellent tweeter that is still being built for other manufacturers. I listen to the older Esotar tweeters everyday...

Besides Dynaudio speakers. The older Esotar tweeter has been or is currently used in the following brands-
EgglestonWorks
Merlin
Silverline Audio
Rockport
Sonus Faber

May be a few others...

I think Stephen's point was probably the older Esotar, being secondary to the fact that this is a pro monitor...built for near-field listening, in a heavily-damped studio room.

I agree with him; for home use, I'd proceed with caution (but you could always go over to the dude's house to have a listen ).

The speakers are not setup and I think it will be a problem going after them so I will leave well enough alone. I think I'll just get a new pair of speakers.

Thanks for the laugh!.

Definitely not for near-field listening-
Model M3P System 3-way Passive Main Monitor Frequency Response
(+/- 3 dB) 30 Hz - 20 kHz Peak SPL 1m, pair
(IEC Short Term) > 129 dB peak Peak SPL 2m, 5.1
(IEC Short Term) > 130.5 dB peak Amplifier minimum 140 W (> 100 dB SPL @ 2.5m) Sensitivity (2.83 V/1m) 90 dB Impedance, Nominal 4 ohm

Besides a nicer cabinet construction...What exactly is the difference between a pro speaker and a home speaker that would require someone to proceed with caution?...

In general there might be some differences in dispersion and such to fit with the near-field usage... honestly I think that the "meant for dampened rooms" doesn't mean that much. After all, as far as I can tell, both home and pro speakers tend to aim for a flat anechoic frequency response. And with that being the case, there shouldn't be huge differences when playing pro speakers in a normal room despite having heard many times that home speakers somehow compensate for all the echoing in a normal room... with a flat frequency response, I don't see how, aside from possible the aforementioned dispersion design.

Also, the M3s are large and such so that I don't think you'd normally be all that close to them anyway. If the price was right, I'd certainly be curious enough to at least check them out.
