I have driven the PMC EB1i speakers in the past with a MC275 Mk V and was quite surprised at how dynamic it was, and it certainly had enough power to reach the volume levels I typically enjoy, usually less than 90 dB. That equates to less than 2 watts output power from the amplifier. I could also crank the system to substantial volume levels that exceed what I normally find comfortable, so I have little doubt a pair of the latest MC75's will not drive the PMC's just fine. As I understand it, the latest MC75 mono tube amps use the same power supply as the MC275. That makes each channel considerably more robust that a MC275 can muster. I'm still just kicking around the idea of replacing the MC452 in the living room system. It certainly isn't because I am unhappy with the 452's performance. No way!

I know you have MC2301s in your other system. I was thinking but partially kidding. You know what they are capable of and if you want the sweet / romantic midrange of a McTube amplifier, why settle for anything other than the MC2301s.

I compared twin MC275s and an MC452 on my Strads and loved the midrange of the MC275s and the control and speed of the MC452. The MC2301s will give you both.

Craig.......I get it now. I didn't realize you were advising me on a second pair of 2301's. Through the years the living room sound system has morphed into a number of different configurations. The last amplifier change, 601's replaced by the MC452, was because of space considerations for the current system equipment setup. There is no room for a pair of mono blocks that require separate shelves. The space where the MC452 currently resides will house a pair of MC75's quite nicely, so there would be no need for abandoning the system as it is presently setup. I get what you are telling me, though. No doubt about it, a pair of MC2301's would be killer, but I believe a pair of MC75's will get the job done should I decide to pull that trigger.

Dan,
The MC75 is superb. Here's my story - I purchased a pair of MC275s to try with my Tannoy Canterbury GR's. My dealer tried to convince me that the MC75 would be a better match but the beautiful green glow of the MC275s won out. About a month later, he called and said to bring them back and get the MC75s. I took them back but delayed on the MC75s. A couple months later I purchased a pair of MC75s. I thought they handled my big Tannoy's extremely well and actually them better than the MC275s. Another couple months passed and my dealer called to offer me a like new pair of MC2301s. I decided to give them a listen and after two weeks of nonstop listening, hauled them back as well. Not an easy task I might add. The only way I could tell any difference was to crank the volume level about 2 notches above outrageous. Even then, the improvement was just not there in my system considering the price difference. At least to my ears. I also have no desire to listen to music at concert levels just to convince myself of an SQ improvement. The MC75s are the real deal. Regrettably, I sold the MC75s for another toy and still regret it. I shall have another pair soon.

I might add that I still had my MC601s in place while all these tube amps came and went. I still love the MC601s with my Tannoy's and had no desire to part with them even if a pair of the tube amps stayed.

Hope my experience is helpful. Here's a photo of one of my MC75s in my room for you to ponder. I say go for it.

Dan,
I know I don’t have the PMC speakers you have, but I do have a pair of PMC twenty 21’s driven by an MC275 vi. The combo is really incredible. Being that the MC275 vi is probably pretty close to what you are considering and how incredible the sound is, I can only imagine how much greater it would be with the mono-blocks. I say go for it.

Good luck Dan. I hope you can find a nice pair of MC75s.

Terry.......Thanks for sharing your experience with your MC75 amplifiers. It serves as confirmation of what I have read from owners comments and reviews. Production ceased on the MC75 Mk II amps (stainless chassis) two years ago. Finding a brand new pair of MC75's may prove difficult.

I believe a MC2301 would be out of place in this particular system of Dan's. 2 MC75's are more beautiful, elegant, and special than 1 MC275. The extra power supply of the mono amp always results in better sound and better resale value (but who would ever want to sell this amp?). If Dan goes through with the purchase I hope that he will do one of his comprehensive reviews. I have felt that his reviews should be published in a main stream magazine. They are that good.

dcanlas....I've always lusted for a pair of those MC75 Anniversary editions ever since they were rolled out. I have no clue where I would use them though....

They look even sweeter on those very cool bases you have them on!
