What a wonderful system to have on a "ship". I've long been fascinated by your posts and your reference to "Oklahoma, but I work overseas most of the year" and your job description of "Radar Engineer".

Obviously, from your "at sea" system you must have large quarters on your ship and I, for one, would love to know more about the secretive Mr. Randerson.

I looked and found your picture, but no information on the thread "do we ever post pictures of ourselves" and I'd love to know more. Whatever you do, you must do well and I find you to be very interesting.

Thanks for the post of your system - It looks great. Hope to learn more. I'm intrigued.

Julian,

Thanks for the kind words. Actually, my stateroom is a bit small, with the constantly changing audio system taking up lots of space as well as the 4000+ CD's and all my books that I have crammed in here. Equipment not in the photo consists of an SRA stand for the B-52, a Wadia 170i, a Threshold phono preamp and an Olive 04HD. I have lots of conventional headphones as well. It is not possible to do serious listening with speakers in such a small place.

I am not allowed to get into some aspects of my work. I work on a forward deployed mobile sensor. In a nutshell, we track hostile ballistic missile launches and support treaty verification. The data is sent to MIT for analysis fed to the Air Force. I work for Raytheon Technical Services, who is currently contracted to operate and maintain the system. I have been with the program about 12 years now. Working with the guys from Lincoln Labs/MIT is both challenging and an honor, especially considering that I was way too immature when I was younger to attend such a prestigious university. I cannot say where are, where we are going, or refer to specific systems. I work on one of two instrumentation ships, the USNS Invincible. A Google search on this ship and the USNS Observation Island will give you a wealth of information about both vessels and the program. I suppose I do well, just well enough not to be able to afford what I really want!

At some point, I would like to share opinions about the Olive. Right now, I am just ripping every CD it will recognize. I have the TOSLINK run to the Reimyo DAC, but plan on going RCA to the Berkeley Alpha DAC this weekend. My other project is an attempt to put a turntable in my room. Obviously it could only be used in port, so I am going with a second hand Well Tempered and a Transfiguration Spirit.

I would love to hear your Spectral/Avalon rig some day. I bought a second hand pair of Avalon Arcus from a buddy, and just love them (they are so different from my Maggie 20.1's). I am thinking seriously of going to Spectral 360's and a pair of Avalon Times.

You have a wonderful system. I would also like to discuss sonic differences between the MS 300 and the Olive. I have a broken 300 I need to have repaired and possibly upgraded. If it is better, I will keep it.

Cheers,

Bob
