Petra Magoni & Ferruccio Spinetti - Musica Nuda
via Qobuz

Very fresh interpretations of internationally known songs, but also well sung Italian ones. Petra is excellent, and the terrific, accompanying bass is very well recorded.

Bram De Looze - Switch The Stream
Qobuz 24/96

This is recorded on a Chris Maene Straight Strung Grand Piano.
We've heard the first one ever sold to the public, in Bruges.
It sounds different from a "normal" piano. My wife and I liked it a lot when we attended the official presentation and first concert on it.

http://www.chrismaene.be/nl/the-stra...g-grand-piano/

Daniel Barenboim had already ordered one and is touring with it.

Bram De Looze is a young Belgian top talent.
This is a very good album.

Florian Weber - Lucent Waters
Qobuz 24/88.2

Very nice new release.
Weber composed all the pieces and is a brilliant piano player.
Nasheet Waits must be one of the leading drummers nowadays.
Ralph Alessi and Linda May Han Oh on trumpet and double bass.

Will definitely try this, the piano is fascinating.

This afternoon, we had tickets for a jazz festival in Brugge.
Jakob Bro was the one we wanted to see, with the fantastic Joey Baron on drums, and Thomas Morgan on bass.
Unfortunately, the band before this trio came too late so they switched groups.
And so we missed Bro...

In honour of him, some of his latest work.

Jakob Bro - Returnings

Ornette Coleman - The Atlantic Years
Qobuz 24/96

Just started streaming this 10-CD box.
So far so good.
'The Shape Of Jazz To Come' I own on SACD, and I think this Qobuz stream isn't inferior to the SACD.

Miles Davis had publicly called him a madman. Leonard Bernstein found him, for his part, completely awesome. Few were those that didn’t have a definitive opinion on Ornette Coleman. Some kind of outlaw who preferred playing his own compositions rather than jazz classics, the American saxophonist also developed harmolodics, a theory uniting harmonics and melody. Coleman would remain a trailblazer, a spoilsport who would influence legions of musicians, and would also annoy a good number of them… This box of ten discs compiles one of the most important era in the career of his author. Between 1959 and 1961, he released six studio albums for the Atlantic label. Six albums that are present here and spiced up with alternative takes and various bonuses, all of this of course impeccably remastered by John Webber. Through the opuses The Shape Of Jazz To Come (1959), Change Of The Century (1959), This Is Our Music (1960), Free Jazz: A Collective Improvisation (1960), Ornette! (1961) and Ornette On Tenor (1961), and the compilations The Art Of Improvisers (1970), Twins (1971), To Whom Who Keeps A Record (1975) and The Ornette Coleman Legacy (1993), we discover the protean art of a musician that had never stopped reassessing himself. A singular and unique voice assisted by other singular and unique voices like Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Scott LaFaro, Billy Higgins and Ed Blackwell. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz

Default What jazz music are you listening to?

Solo Flight - The Genius of Charlie Christian
Columbia G 30779 (1972), vinyl 2-record set

This is a great collection of recordings from 1939-1941 featuring Christian, most of them with the Benny Goodman Sextet. I picked this up in a used record shop for about $5 because it has a big “Columbia Record Company Radio Station Service” promo label stuck on the front cover. The vinyl, however, is pristine, and while there’s occasional distortion, the sound overall isn’t bad.
