How to connect 4 subwoofers?
There is but a single LFE output on my pre-pro and while my Velo SMS-1 can EQ 3 subs, what is the best way to connect 4 subs to one LFE output (balanced or unbalanced) and w/ or w/o the SMS-1???
Various Web sites recommend 4 subs for best effect for the LFE channel -- but how??? (just a thought -- use the SMS-1 to connect to two front subs and then stack two in the back of the room and use a splitter from the third output from the SMS-1) -- but getting phase and polarity on 4 subs would seem to be, to say the least, a real challenge) Thoughts/opinions?? Thanks, MikeSp

That is pretty easy; in fact right now I'm doing a theater system that has 4 Gothams in it. If they are all JL's; you can make one a master, and slave the rest.
You can also use a high quality custom made splitter. I use them all the time from Wireworld; RCA or XLR. That will give you maximum flexibilty in making each a master, and calibrating each individually.

Multiple subs are usually done for flatter bass response, not just all out SPL.

IIRC, you can also daisy-chain the SMS-1's.

When is four Fathoms just enough? Most of the time!
Here is a great paper on running multiple subs in rectangular rooms: http://www.harman.com/EN-US/OurCompa...s/multsubs.pdf The short answer is that subs at the midpoint of the walls give the flattest response over the entire room. More than four subs is probably overkill and won't increase bass output. Four subs, one in each corner, is almost as good as the center-wall arrangement. Two subs, one centered on the front wall, and one centered on the rear, is almost as good as a four sub arrangement. This stuff is awesome! Lots of opportunities to spend money.

Emotiva has both balanced and unbalanced splitters. I use a miniDSP for a splitter and equalization with my two subs.

I wasn't familiar with the sms1 - it looks really cool. If it can handle output to 3 subs ( I didn't verify this - going on what you said), then I would run my sub out into it - sending a full range signal into the sms1, then eq -ing and crossing over with the sms1, the 3 subs. The 4th sub is just out of luck and I would assume it will cause more problems than it's worth. 3 in proper phase and eq'd to the room should handily outperform 4 improperly installed.
If as Kal says above that you can only eq 1 channel with the sms1, than something like the jbl box he mentions is the way to go. Anything else is a giant science experiment. |

Theoretically, you can connect many subs to the SMS-1 (using Y-connectors) but it has only 1 EQ channel and that EQ is applied to all the subs.
