It sounds like you want a DTS offering (as opposed to, say, a Dolby offering).

The response from Bryston, indicates that probably a communication between the SP3 and the Oppo went like this:
Oppo: I want to send you DTS X
SP3: From my DTS options the max I can do is DTSHD, so send me that.
Oppo: Ok here it goes...

So my guess is that since you seem to prefer the DTS family, the SP3 goes along with your request and gives the best it has within the DTS family. So in that regard there is an advantage in that it is trying to please you.

PS. If the Oppo has analog outputs you can also have the Oppo decode the DTS X signal and send the decoded (analog) signal to the SP3. You can use the 7.1 inputs in the SP3.

Then you can decide which sound you like better.

Depends what the other option is. If you have a 7.1 system and the choice is between DTS (HDMA) 5.1 or Dolby (TrueHD) 5.1 then selecting DTS X or Atmos is a good way of getting 7.1 discrete channels out of it.

Is this a new 4K board? Isn't Bryston updating their board to pass HDR?

This is the existing hdmi upgrade for 4K pass through. I was not aware they are planning a further update.

I spoke with someone, Mike I believe, about 10 months ago that said a 4K HDR board was in the works. The hardware was available, but getting the software right was going to take time. Apparently lots of time since we still don’t have it.

HDR Passthrough? I thought it already did that as it supports HDCP 2.2

I would assume pass through, because the SP3 has never processed video. There’s a thread I started on it last year. I believe James commented there.

So to update an older unit you would need $4K? Wow, I used to credit Bryston for its "upgradability" factor, but at that price, makes more sense to just buy a different unit. After all, this technology keeps changing very other year, so in two years you will be spending another $4K? Tough sell IMO...

"4K video" not 4K $
LOL!

A few posts back someone said it was $1000 USD.
