Hi Fi News Article on MC275

Those of you interested might try and pick up the current issue (Dec 2010) of Hi Fi News. They have a four page write up on the evolution of the MC 275 by Ken Kessler. Just received my issue in the mail today.

The article is not really a review of the 275 rather an article discussing why it was reintroduced after being out of production for 20 years and some of the changes that were included with each iteration.

The article starts off noting how rare it is for a company to bring back a product 20 years after production had stopped. Yet McIntosh did just that then following up 4 years later with a slight revamp and then again six years later with a major revamp at which time it kept in the product line.
Kessler notes that before its initial retirement the MC275 was considered one of the finest tube amplifiers available, right up there with Marantz Model 9’s and Harmon-Kardon Citation’s.
The original MC275 was built to meet the demand of speakers such as the AR-3’s which placed too much demand on 15 tube amps.

The article goes on to discuss how the 275 was reintroduced due to customer demand . The decided to release a Limited Edition wit the balanced outputs and gold plated speaker connections. The inputs had to be fixed a 2V so it would work well with modern pre-amps. The unit would also use McItosh branded KT -88’s. According to Sydney Corderman adding some of the features yet keeping the outward appearance the same created some problems.
There are several other changes noted but they are too extensive to be written up here.
I wonder of this article is based on something Kessler included in his McIntosh book?

How do you figure that. You load a disc. Take the disc out.

Occasionally you have to add some Cover Art.

Then select your music by, Artist, genera, title, etc and never have to leave your seat to skip over the dud tracks.
