Britt.......To the best of my knowledge none of the McIntosh tube amplifiers employ Power Guard. I believe it is because solid state amplifiers clip extremely hard, with distortion levels well in excess of rated power. This usually means goodbye to tweeters and midrange drivers. Power Guard catches this increase in distortion early, reducing the input levels accordingly to ensure clean output. On the other hand, tube power amplifiers clip in a soft fashion when over driven. This clipping is audible but not necessarily as detrimental to speaker drivers as solid state clipping, so no Power Guard is necessary.

I originally voted never but I have to change my vote. My left PG just came on and peak SPL according to the free spl meter on my iPhone was 97.5db

Not quite 124dB but according to Wikipedia a jackhammer is ~100 so not half bad.
