Yes they can and I think even possibly more so if a couple did not have children.

Cathy and I decided not to have children so in place of them we had our furry companions over the past 30 years or so.

Terry I'm sorry for your loss and having not seen this earlier. Having read your post title I obviously knew what the outcome was going to be. As I read your post a lump began to form in my throat and tears welled up in my eyes. Thanks for taking the time to share this.
As someone who's had pets and no children I can completely understand you Tiger is your family in that way. Anyone who has lost a beloved pet, children or not, knows this is something that will e eventually come and will effect you in ways you can never imagine.
And I'm glad you and your wife were able to see Tiger one last time. I'm also sure Tiger held on hoping to see Dad one last time before he moved on. s I read your post I lump began to form in my throat and tear welled up in my eyes. Thanks for taking the time to share this.

And as you that have had pet companions know tiger had the very best life I could possibly give him.

He was one loved buddy for 16-yrs.
