Default Suggestions needed. Taking Reel to Reel Tape out of the box and getting it to work

on a reel to reel machine. As you know, I bought a Tascam ATR 60 reel to reel machine. As part of the deal, five new 1 inch tapes came with it. In opening one of the tape boxes with the goal of getting it onto the Tascam reel to reel, I noticed that the tape sides were inverted. The darker-non shinny side was on the outside and the shinny side was on the inside. I check my other two Teac 3340s to make sure that this wasn't a mistake. Anyway, I spend the better part of seven hours trying to find a way to correct this problem. The only thing I could think of, which was sucessful but dangerous, was to use the plastic top of a screw driver as a kind of altering device to change the sides of the tape as the reel to reel rewind was in operation. This might have been very dangerous; but I decided to do this. There has to be a better way to get the tape onto the reels properly but I could not think of any at the time. Do you have any suggestions. I feel a little dumb in posting this blog; but I don't want to go through all that danger and waste of time again; so I will admit this problem to all of you.

Scott...Tapes are generally stored tail out so you have to rewind onto an empty reel for playback.

This might sound crazy but the shinny side of the tape has to be on the outside. I did what you recommended and for some strange reason- there was no change. The Shinny side remained on the inside. I could get it to reverse.

Scott.......Some tape manufactures use a special coating on the backside of tape to increase the traction of the pinch roller. You may find that the shiny side is the magnetic side. Give it a whirl, there's nothing to lose.

Steve I think has it. Tapes should be stored tails out!

I now see what my mistake was. I went on Youtube to Tascam ATR 60s and 80s and watched a number of videos. They tapes running though the machines were all shinny side on the inside. This is the way the tape comes when it is de boxed. I now undertand what I must do. thanks for all your help.

Myles.......You are correct, and that is how I store my tape. Rewind, then play back to take up reel and store. It gives you a perfect tape pack every time.

I think Scott is thinking that somehow his tape has been rewound and twisted so that the magnetic side is out. I suggested he try recording on the tape just the way it is. I find it very hard to believe anyone would store tape in any other manner.
