Question ET3SE vs C2300 for MC601's ....

I was wondering how the ET3SE or ET5 C-J preamps would work with my MC601's. I'm looking for a little tube goodness and would like to know if anyone has auditioned the newer preamps? I realize I would lose some features like phono and tone controls but I don't think I need tone controls any more.

Joe,
I don't think you can go wrong with any C-J preamp made in the last 10 years or so, really. From the ART/ACT series onwards. I mean, if there is one thing C-J is really known for, it's preamps. For example, the Premier 16/17 ART derivatives (both Series 1 and 2) and the CT-5 are all superb as well as the ART/ACT big guns.

I've not heard the ET3SE, but I've heard the "regular" ET3, and it was excellent; not as quite as good as my Premier 17, though. The SE may be a different story.

I believe Rafale just posted a link recently regarding the ET5 where it got a terrific review from TAS.

Thanks Stephen.

I value your opinion. I may get to hear one next week.

We've reviewed both and there's a BIG jump from the ET3SE to the ET5. Big jump in price too.

I think the ET3SE vs. 2300 will be an either or, but the ET5 is a pretty big step up.

I've heard the MC601's on the SE and the C2300. I also heard the MC601's with the C500 C/T combo. All 3 are great. Open and warm with all the finess you'll want. My #1 choice would be the C500 C/T combo, #2 would be the C2300 & CJ #3. I've recently started my quest for a 2 channel and theater rig and owned Mac in the 70's. I owned CJ recently ...since 2002. Checked out a lot of brands. So far, I think I'm going with the 601's & C500 C/T rig with Sonus Faber Amati Futura's.

I have used the prem16 and ART driving 6m cables into Mac 501's. They controlled the bass as good or better than my C2300.

cheers
