Toe in with the D3 series vs. Previous Series?

I am seeing a few D3 setups where the speakers cross in front of the listener. I haven't seen this before the D3 series. Any reason?

I always thought the rule of thumb with the D2 series was to have the speakers cross a couple feet behind the listener. Any thoughts?

There is definitely a reason. If you like seeing your favorite band perform across the street, I highly recommend the technique.

Bonafide? I've seen it done and tried it myself. Results in a system where you sit there thinking to yourself "sounds like a lot of fun is happening 8 ft in front of me. Shame I wasn't invited."

My Bryston dealer had some JBL Synthesis set up crossed in front several years back and it made for a very wide sweet spot, the whole couch.

... now does this "rule" also apply to the 802D2. I've always been told that they sound best almost NOT toed in at all. Does it make sense to toe them in strongly? Asking advice before I try because I have them set up on spikes and they are not easy to move. But if it brings improvement I'll give it a try - any experience/thoughts?
